Starts ups are ‘dying in droves’ in ‘mass extinction event’
The Wall Street Journal recently discussed how venture capital drying up is having an impact on startups. In my opinion, this reporting doesn’t directly translate to ag startups. As one cow tech entrepreneur told me, the funding for ‘building rockets and missions to Mars’ is what is drying up. Still, the more dependent a cow tech startup is on venture capital, the harder things are going to get. A panel of startups at the Precision Dairy Conference last week said the “easy money” for cow techs stopped a long time ago. They reported the easy venture capitalists figured out some time ago that ag wasn’t a place to expect 10Xing one’s money. Tech in ag returns on a much slower timeframe than other startup ventures, and ag tech founders often still have to explain this reality to investors.

Dairy profit projections from ZISK
Projected profitability for the next 12 months for two dairy herd sizes HAVE TURNED NEGATIVE
for some large-herd dairies in recent profit projections from ZISK.
ZISK is a profit-projection smartphone app that tracks individual dairy farm profitability based on current CME board prices. Projections for a 1,000-cow dairy producing an average of 80 pounds of milk per cow and a 2,500-cow dairy producing an average of 85 pounds of milk per cow are provided.
12-month dairy farm profit projections (as of June 27, 2023):
1,000-cow dairy = -$80,000 (DOWN
about $296,100 since the beginning of June)
2,500-cow dairy = $477,000 (DOWN
about $773,000 since the beginning of June)
